Apex Legends devs call players “freeloaders”, “ass-hats” and more in public response
Two Respawn Entertainment team members set the Apex Legends community on fire today as they responded to fan comments. They went on to comment on fan questions in a relatively hostile manner dubbing them “ass-hats”, “dicks” and implying that they were freeloading off the game’s free-to-play structure.
The incident stems from when Respawn Entertainment issued a formal apology regarding their Iron Crown Collection Event due to fan outrage regarding how the game was starting to be monetized. The Reddit thread discussing the apology is honestly a goldmine of how a developer shouldn’t interact with the fanbase.
Project Lead Drew McCoy was the most active in the thread, who insisted that the Iron Crown event was a success both with revenue and player engagement, no matter how the fans actually felt about it.
Fans in the thread were obviously angry but were hopeful that Respawn would be more considerate in the future. However McCoy went on the offensive dubbing players “ass-hats”:
And finally “Freeloaders”:
One more, claiming that Respawn are extremely generous with the free things that they give out:
The thread also led to some interesting information about Titanfall and Titanfall 2 which were assumed by many to have underperformed in the market. McCoy claims that this is information and both the games were actually huge successes.
Respawn Entertainment Community Manager Jay Frechette didn’t hold back either, coming up with the edgiest schoolyard comeback:
So much anger:
The thread is honestly mind blowing and I hope Respawn Entertainment gets their stuff in order. Whatever you think about the situation, this is not the way to handle it. Thoughts on the whole situation? Let us know in the comments below.
Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
