Tuesday night. After 11PM here in the Midwestern United States. In England, home of Bleeding Cool Rumourmonger-in-Chief Rich Johnston, it’s after 4AM. But that didn’t stop Rich from popping into the Bleeding Cool bullpen to demand that someone cover this breaking story, and that they do it tonight! Time is running out!!!

“Oi!” Rich said, “If any of you blokes could write this up tonight that would be a good thing, it would. Pip pip!”

Why would Rich wake up at 4AM to tell us to write about what appears to be little more than a signup form so that Marvel can market future Skottie Young products to potential customers via spam emails? Did Rich wake up from a dead sleep, fresh from a vivid nightmare about this secret Skottie Young project, sweat pouring from his brow, compelled with an undeniable urge to get this story up on Bleeding Cool as soon as possible (but not compelled enough to write it himself)?

We may never know. Well, at least, not until tomorrow morning when we ask him. But clearly it’s important. So here it is.

Marvel has a secret Skottie Young project, inventively titled “Secret Skottie Project.” To promote the project, they have a page, and that page says:

WANT MORE SKOTTIE?

This fall, Marvel will be launching a new exclusive product featuring Skottie Young’s amazing illustrations. Sign up and be the first to learn about this secret project!

Plus, you’ll earn 10,000 Marvel Insider points just for signing up!

So what is Marvel planning to sell? A new comic? Collectible dolls or statues? Skottie Young’s stinky used sweat socks for perverts? The possibilities are limitless. The fact is, we don’t know anything more than what it says on the page.

But if you click the button to sign up, you can enter your email (and optionally uncheck an option to allow Marvel to send you email about other stuff as well), and then, presumably, at some point in the future, you’ll learn more about this secret project.

And you had better do it now. Why? We don’t know. But Rich seemed to think it was important.

Shortly after the new iPhone reveals today from Apple, Razer unveiled their own line new Arctech smartphone cases for both Razer and Apple lines. Each of these cases, aside from being designed in the company color lines, come with Thermaphene. Which is a thermally-conductive material designed to make your phone cool down while playing games that may cause your phone to heat up. The cases have currently been made for the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and the Razer Phone 2. More are on the way, but the company hasn’t revealed what they are yet. We tried these out at PAX West and they are pretty slick, and you can even feel the cooling elements work without the phone in the case. If you play a lot of games on your phone, especially titles like Fortnite that can drain the battery and heat it up quick, this may just be the case you need.

The Razer Arctech cases feature a combination of thermally-conductive layers to effectively dissipate heat, allowing for better phone performance and improved battery life. They have been designed to allow unhindered network connectivity, ensuring smooth gameplay and video streaming as well as working seamlessly with Qi-certified wireless chargers.

“Smartphone users want to protect their handset but still enjoy maximum performance and battery life,” says Alvin Cheung, Senior Vice President for Razer’s peripherals business unit. “The new Razer Arctech cases deliver great protection, stylish looks and fantastic cooling to keep those gaming sessions going longer.”

With season 14 set to premiere on Wednesday, September 25, FXX‘s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is now tied with ABC’s The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet as the longest-running live-action comedy series. Now that’s a title Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) would be more than happy to hang behind the bar – and one they’re expected to hold on their vey own very soon. Safe to say things are pretty good for The Gang from Paddy’s Pub – and from the sounds of FX CEO John Landgraf, the network would like things to keep going “pretty good” for two more seasons (at least).

Now that we’ve had a chance to check out the official trailer for the series’ return (below, and you can also check out a previews here, here, and here), we need the “Paddy’s Power Plan” now more than ever. Except this time, we’re taking a breather to learn a little more about Philly’s own high-flying stable – beginning with “The Bird” Dee Reynolds and her very own trading card!

From her strengths (like her massive wing span and neck length) and weaknesses (like flip cup and heart attacks) to her signature move “The Sonic Squawk,” here’s the 4-1-1 on our high-flyin’ crack addict:

FXX

Previously, Ronald “The Meat Mountain” McDonald unveiled his three-step plan to help you “Beat That Meat” – which apparently involves food poisoning, posing, and oiling ourselves down/soaping ourselves up?!?

Hey, if it’s good enough for Paddy’s fixer and enforcer then it’s good enough for us…

always sunny
FXX

Previously on our “Paddy’s Power Plan,” we had a finely detailed workout from none other than “Diamond” Dennis Reynolds, with his “Bod by God” path to righteous abs. From the stealth-like ability to run away (or keep someone from running away) and being able to unlock (lock?) a door in record-breaking time to counting (embellishing) our number of “conquests,” do you knw what the best part of this workout plan is?

You don’t actually even have to do it. It’s the implication…

always sunny
FXX

Now it’s important that you find a way to properly integrate both of these into the previously-released “Mr. Janitor” Charlie Kelly’s “The Charlie-Work It Out Plan” – where you’ll be vomiting, rat-killing, and probably picking up some bacteria from the floor or carpet – all on the path to a better, more squared-circle-worthy you:

FXX

Before you know it – and after a 30-day stay in the hospital (minimum 10 days in a coma) – you’ll be looking and feeling like The Gang does in the new season poster:

FXX

Previously, McElhenney posted a teaser that’s clearly from the upcoming episode that finds The Gang putting up their apartments as AirBnB options – of course, to better their love lives (more on that below). What makes this episode particularly special? It’s also one of two episodes Howerton is set to direct this season.

Our two favorite parts? They make sure everyone knows where the the “shitter” is located prior to arrival – Frank’s email address (which we tried sending a message to but it didn’t work):

always sunny
FXX / It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

McElhenney also gave us a look inside the editing room at a scene he referred to “as Sunny as it gets.” Without spoiling what you’re about to see, here are a few things to keep in mind: Mac is still way too submissive to Dennis, Frank’s behind on getting his teeth sharpened, Dee finds herself on the losing end of a comment once again – and a familar face returns:

Previously, McElhenney confirmed filming on the season was complete (trailer soon?!?). But better than that, in the video below we see that even after 14 seasons-and-counting, McElhenney, Howerton, Day, Olson, and DeVito still find ways to make each other laugh – and that speaks volumes for the show’s incredible success:

Here are some highlights from the show’s Television Critics Association (TCA) set visit early last month, offering some clues to what fans can expect:

● For McElhenney, one of the reasons Always Sunny has lasted this long is that the fanbase knows the series isn’t a “how to” guide to life:

“Our audience knows where we’re coming from. We very rarely get blowback because our audience is savvy enough to know we’re not advocating bad behavior, we’re satirizing it.”

●While the show isn’t afraid to tackle some major social issues – Olson believes their approach to the topics creates a unique character for the television landscape: a woman who not only recognizes the misogyny around her but is willing to get angry – very angry: “We’re showing how ridiculous is to talk to someone like that.”

● So what can fans expect this season? Well, we know Dolph Lundgrenbut as John Thundergun?!? We are getting a “film noir” episode – as well as episodes dealing with global warming, a Waiting for Godot-themed outing set in the middle of a laser tag game, and The Gang putting up their apartments as AirBnB options to better their love lives (with Howerton set to direct this episode and an additional one).

● As for Mac getting a boyfriend at some point next season, McElhenney only response? “Maybe.” As for Mac being a changed, better person after last season? Don’t hold your breath:

“He’s pretty much exactly the same. Our characters might change — but they don’t evolve. He’s not a better person.”

● One thing that bothers Day? That people still see the show as “dirty” – even after over a decade on the air:

“There’s a fundamental misunderstanding of what our show is. I hate that our show is dismissed as filthy. I don’t think we’re dirty…We are trying to say something about us as Americans.”

DeVito put it much more bluntly when it comes to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: “It’s not a dirty f***ing show!”

Developed by McElhenney and Howerton, and written/executive produced by McElhenney, Howerton, and Day, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was FX’s first comedy hit before moving over to FXX – a fact that FX CEO John Landgraf does not take lightly when he explained at the Television Critics Association (TCA) why the series has been so successful for so long – even after all this time: “It was the fist successful deconstruction and reconstruction of a sitcom,” praising the leads as “five really hilarious degenerates who are most active schemers” as well as the main reason for the show’s success – while also acknowledging the various “social issues” that the series addressed so effectively in the past.

In December, Marvel Comics will publish Incoming, kicking off the next year’s worth of various super-mega-crossover events and number one issue relaunches with the shocking death of a character that will unite all the heroes of the Marvel Universe to solve the mystery. There’s nothing Marvel loves more than the shocking death of a character to show just how serious whatever the event-of-the-moment is, but since we’ve got some lead time on this one, we figure we could offer Marvel some suggestions on just who they should kill off this time.

Marvel's Incoming Super-Mega-Crossover Event Features Two X-Men Who Just "Died" [Spoilers?]

Conan the Barbarian

So you’ve recently gotten back the rights to publish Conan comics, but, whoops, you couldn’t help yourself and launched seventeen consecutive series starring the titular barbarian. Now, less than a year after he debuted, Conan is already feeling a bit over-exposed — and not just because he only wears a loincloth. No worries! There’s a perfect solution: kill him off! Not only would nobody see it coming, but he’ll be just as popular as ever when you bring him back six months later!

Top Five Heroes Marvel Should Brutally Murder for Incoming

Gwenpool

In Gwenpool Strikes Back, we learn that Gwen is looking for ways to stay relevant so that Marvel editorial doesn’t forget about her and she can keep starring in comic books. Well, what better way to stay relevant than to be killed off to start a super-mega-crossover event (or whatever this is supposed to be)? People will be talking about Gwen probably until the next big Marvel death, and that’s gotta be what, three months at least? Honestly, we’re just surprised she hasn’t come up with the idea on her own.

Top Five Heroes Marvel Should Brutally Murder for Incoming

Major X

Look, we’re not saying we don’t love Major X. His mini-series was awesome and we’d love to see more of him. But the fact of the matter is, we all saw what happened with Youngblood. Who knows what possibilities Rob Liefeld has left open for Terrific Production LLC to gain control of more of his characters. Major X could be next. Andrew Rev might own him already, for all we know. It’s probably best to kill him off now.

Top Five Heroes Marvel Should Brutally Murder for Incoming

Tony Stark

We all know that Marvel loves to make their comics more like the movies, even though the movies are technically based on the comics, like a giant multimedia snake constantly swallowing its own tail. Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame really gave people all the feels, and Marvel can capitalize on all the hard work Marvel Studios put into that moment by cheaply killing off Tony for this event comic. Sure, we’re pretty certain Marvel already killed off Tony just died and came back in the comics a few years ago, but honestly, who hasn’t?

Top Five Heroes Marvel Should Brutally Murder for Incoming

Spider-Man

We know that after that deal between Disney and Sony fell through, certain high-ranking Marvel executives and Trump advisors have got to be pretty ticked off. What better way to get back at Sony than to spitefully kill Spider-Man off in the comics? Yes, technically, we see him right on the cover, looking at the dead body, which would seem to disqualify him. But does it? There are like twenty-five other Spider-people running around the Marvel Universe at any given moment. Who would even know the difference?

Top Five Heroes Marvel Should Brutally Murder for Incoming

Wiccan or Hulkling

These popular Young Avengers just made international news cycles when the mayor of Rio de Janeiro tried to ban Avengers: The Children’s Crusade for featuring their epic gay kiss. Marvel is currently riding that headline news into a new wave of popularity for the characters, but you know what would make even more headline news? If they killed one of them off. Just think of all the outraged editorials that would be written in the wake of that. Hell, we’d probably write three or four of them ourselves! It’s like a license to print money, people! Wait, why doesn’t Marvel just print their own money?

Top Five Heroes Marvel Should Brutally Murder for Incoming

Mickey Mouse

Ten years after Disney purchased Marvel, their flagship character finally appeared in Marvel Comics thanks to the D23 variant cover for Marvel Comics #1000. Ten years is a long time to wait… to kill someone off. But honestly, Marvel has no choice but to do it. Sure, Disney executives would probably totally freak out at the mere suggestion, but sometimes you’ve just got to do what’s best for someone, even if they don’t know what’s good for them. Since he’s only made one appearance, Mickey is like the only Marvel Comics character that hasn’t been killed off yet, which means speculators will eat it up. Remember when Akira Yoshida said he had an idea to sell a million copies? This is it. It’s got to be.

Top Five Heroes Marvel Should Brutally Murder for Incoming

We hope you enjoyed our suggestions, and hopefully Marvel is listening. Do you have any ideas of your own on which beloved characters should be sacrificed for a short-term sales boost? Post your ideas in the comments!

Back in July the first trailer for the big screen adaptation of Cats dropped and there was quite the reaction to say the least. No one was really sure what to make of human/cat hybrids and despite it being Comic-Con weekend it became the talk of the town. It’s been three weeks so things have calmed down a little but Universal Pictures decided to release a new behind-the-scenes featurette with the main cast and it does feature some new footage.

If we have learned anything from Alita: Battle Angel it’s that we can settle into weird looking main characters with enough time. The question for Cats becomes whether or not anyone is going to take a chance on the movie being a little weird at the beginning and whether or not it can go up against Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It’s a gamble for Universal Pictures and we’ll have to see if it pays off. They lost the release date game of chicken last year when Mortal Engines bombed rather spectacularly. Let’s hope they don’t go two for two.

Summary: A tribe of cats called the Jellicles must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life.

Cats, directed by Tom Hooper, stars James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Francesca Hayward. It will be released on December 20th.

Looks like Margot Robbie could be on her way to taking on yet another iconic comic book role. According to Collider Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment has obtained the rights to the cult property and Collider has learned that they have brought on Miles Joris-Peyrafitte as the director. Robbie, while not signed to star at the moment as sources say that she won’t sign on to star until she sees a completed script, is set to produce the movie.

It seems that things might be a little murky as to whether or not any of the original creators of the character will be involved with the project. Tank Girl Co-creator Alan Martin took to Twitter on Monday to say that he hasn’t been contacted about the movie and they are “several months into development”.

Joris-Peyrafitte is yet another indie development plucked from the small movie festival circuit and thrown into a much bigger production. He made his directorial debut with As You Are in 2016 and worked with Robbie this year on the movie Dreamland. Robbie has stared in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood this year and is set to return to the big screen as Harley Quinn in February of next year.

Now that we find ourselves in September and creeping ever so closer to the fall, now’s a good time to update ourselves on pre-season news before The CW’s “Arrowverse” shows return. With Arrow shuffling off the network’s programming coil after an abbreviated eighth season (making The Flash the “elder states-show” of the “Arrowverse”), Ruby Rose-starrer Batwoman joining the family, and a looming “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover that could change things dramatically (more on that below), the 2019-2020 season isn’t exactly going to be lacking in change – and the news hasn’t slowed down.

Now we’re getting official images from The CW (also above) for season-opener, “Starling City” – with the biggest highlights being the appearance of Oliver’s (Stephen Amell) mother Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson) and Tommy Merlyn (Colin Donnell) as well as the family mansion. Why is this so important? Because Moira and Tommy shuffled off our Arrowverse coil early in the series and the home was destroyed – which adds further evidence that the series would be playing fast-and-loose with time and alternate universes.

Fans also have a chane to see the new costumes in store for Oliver’s emerald archer, Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy), and John Diggle (David Ramsey). Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy) and Rene Ramirez (Rick Gonzalez) also make a guest appearance, but in more everyday street-safe clothing.

Arrow co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim and Amell shared some thoughts on what fans can expect during an interview with and TV Line:

● Guggenheim sees the first seven episodes as being an homage to the first seven seasons, with “stunts that we’ve never seen before” – with Amell teasing “a sense of humor for Oliver.”

● Amell references “a familiar encounter” early on that has Oliver realizing that his “‘Crisis’ Management” is going to have to be more of a team effort.

● As for the show’s future storylines? Guggenheim is excited to take that narrative in a direction they haven’t before: “We get to do something with Team Arrow 2.0 that we didn’t get a chance to do with 1.0, which is tell the story of their growing pains That’s a lot of fun.”

The Road to “Crisis on Infinite Earths”

Viewers can’t say they weren’t warned in advance. At the end of 2018’s CW Arrowverse “Elseworlds” crossover that brought together The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl (and nearly DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, but they let it go to machine – way too busy for all that), we saw that the end was only the beginning… of the end. As Barry (Grant Gustin) and Oliver (Amell) shared what felt like a final toast and Kate Kane’s Batwoman (Rose) returned to protecting the streets of Gotham – with a sense that something felt a little off – we got a small taste of what’s still to come in 2019…

“Crisis on Infinite Earths!” Worlds will live! Worlds will die!

And the CW’s “Arrowverse” will never be the same…

The season’s eighth episode will be the “Crisis” crossover episode – comprising the fourth hour of the crossover:

Supergirl – Sunday, December 8th (8/7c)

Batwoman – Monday, December 9th (8/7c)

The Flash – Tuesday, December 10th (8/7c)

Arrow – Tuesday, January 14, 2020 (8/7c)

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – Tuesday, January 14, 2020 (9/8c)

Black Lightning will also be represented during the crossover event, which will also feature Jon Cryer (as Lex Luthor), Tyler Hoechlin (Superman), Elizabeth Tulloch (Lois Lane), Kevin Conroy (Future Bruce Wayne), Burt Ward, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow star Brandon Routh (Kingdom Come Superman). Johnathon Schaech is also expectd to reprise his role as Old West (and a brief run in the future in the comics) gunslinger Jonah Hex.

For most of their respective seasons, things have been “All Quiet on the ‘Crisis’ Front” when it came to Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl – but that changed in a big way during their respective season finales… even for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow!

CW

In Arrow season finale “You Have Saved This City,” the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) returns to cash in on the favor that Oliver owes him: help him save the multiverse – taking a moment to tell him the “fine print”: Oliver’s going to die during “Crisis” and there’s nothing the Monitor can do to stop it.

Then there’s that matter of Future Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) and the trip she’s taking with the Monitor to see Oliver… somewhere… and it’s apparently a place she can’t come back from. Hmmm…

Over at The Flash season finale “Legacy,” some recent maneuverings with Time moved up the date on Barry’s “red skies/2024” newspaper warning just a wee bit… to say, 2019?

The fourth season finale of Supergirl “The Quest for Peace” had The Monitor speaking to a hooded figure, telling him that now is the time for him to lead “his people” and to take revenge on his captor… and brother: J’onn J’onzz (David Harewood). Meanwhile, just because Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) may have shuffled off this mortal coil (???) doesn’t mean his role in the upcoming “Crisis” is over quite yet…

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season finale “Hey, World!” found the plan to take down Neron (Brandon Routh) resulting in a major status quo change for Zari (Tala Ashe) – a change that the suddenly-appearing Monitor does not appear to approve of in any way, shape, or form. At least he got some popcorn out of it – and yes, that is The Book of Destiny he’s using to balance it.

The CW’s Batwoman and Supergirl premiere Sunday, October 6; while The Flash premieres Tuesday, October 8, with Arrow joining them on October 15. Black Lightning premieres the following week, on Monday, October 21.

One of the best things about watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe movies is figuring out where it all came from.  These cinematic continuities have always been a thing somewhat apart from their comic book origins out of necessity, but even when they seem to radically depart from comic book continuity, you’ll often find that those departures are still inspired by specific visuals and themes from specific vintage comics.  Call it a remixed continuity, of sorts.  Zack Snyder‘s DC film work contains countless dozens (hundreds?) of such scenes pretty obviously inspired by specific comic book covers or moments, which have gone relatively unnoticed.  I keep promising BC EiC Kaitlyn Booth that I’m going to do a series of posts about that, though it’ll take me some time to unwind it all. Those films are frankly kind of astonishing from that perspective alone.

But on the subject of Marvel film vs comic book continuity, I think it’s possible there’s a rather important but weird set of circumstances that takes place across several of the Marvel films that is loosely inspired by one very obscure, very weird tale from the late golden age.  If you haven’t seen Avengers: Infinity War, there are mild spoilers below.

Did Captain America's Weirdest Tale Help Inspire Avengers: Infinity War?

Captain America Comics #74 can make a serious claim to being the strangest, most obscure Captain America comic ever published.  The comics industry was moving away from super-heroes and towards horror at the time, which accounts for the “Weird Tales” in the title on the cover, and the seriously weird tale contained in the story itself.  Even those collectors who have managed to obtain this rare prize have never known quite what to make of it, as evidenced by the auction description from tonite’s Comic Connect session:

Yeah, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, that’s a Captain America comic. With the Red Skull on the cover. But, you know, horror. Trying to dress up the Super Soldier like he’s some kind of Halloween novelty act. It’s depressing but true: by the late 1940s, superhero comics were suffering a dramatic drop in sales, as young readers matured into dimestore novels, newspapers, and radio comedies, and the new batch of kids, jaded by years of dad-less wartime existences in crushing poverty, proved too cynical to buy into the exploits of costumed do-gooders. DC responded by sacking nearly their entire cape lineup and retreating to funny animals and westerns, while Timely noticed the sudden rise in interest of horror comics and rebranded their entire line as Weird this and Astonishing that. This is the beginning, a truly bizarre amalgam of 1940s hero adventure and newfangled horror storytelling, as this really odd cover wraps around three gruesome tales that have, well, almost nothing to do with Cap. Like, at all. Dark days ahead. Thanks to low print runs, these issues, catnip for hardcore Cap fanatics, are crazy hard to track down, so when you see one, jump on it!

Obscure as it is, the setting and theme of Captain America Comics #74 seems a little familiar to us now: It’s the late 1940s, and the Red Skull has found himself in some sort of strange purgatory world.  A plunge off of a daunting cliff into the abyss has grave importance to the story — and implications for the future of those who visit this place.

To be clear, there are many differences in the details, but the overall concept and visuals — and that cover — bring to mind the cloaked figure of the Red Skull on Vormir, and the plunge over the cliff into the abyss here has a terrible importance of a different kind.

There’s no soul gems involved here to be certain… just a battle for your soul itself.  And overall, this eerie little forgotten Captain America and Red Skull story has a familiar ring in the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I’d also suspect that there’s a few collectors out there who have been on the hunt for a copy of this caliber for quite some time as well.  Let’s give it some context: there are 3,686 copies of Avengers #4 (first Silver Age Captain America) on the CGC Census, and it is an important and in-demand key comic.  There are 65 copies of Captain America Comics #74 on the CGC census, and while fewer people have even heard of this weird little Captain America comic, I think that’s likely to change soon.  Still not soul gem hard-to-get perhaps, except that the copy in tonite’s Comic Connect session is the second highest graded copy on the CGC Census at CGC 7.5, so unless you’ve mastered that time-travel trick like they pulled on in Avengers: Infinity War, it might be awhile before anyone gets a shot at another this nice.
