Fortnite’s latest update made the game’s PC file size a whole lot smaller

Games keep getting bigger and bigger, but a few developers have finally seemed to realize that storage space on a PC is a finite resource. Last week, Infinity Ward let players uninstall certain parts of Call of Duty: Warzone to make it smaller, and now Epic is getting into the space-saving game with Fortnite as well.

Fortnite’s latest update has reduced the file size of the game on PC by over 60 GB, bringing it down to somewhere around 25-30 GB in total — it’s now 26.8 GB for me. Epic also announced on Twitter the day before the patch that this update will help reduce the download size of future patches as well. Epic noted that this new version of the game should help increase loading times as well, thanks to its more efficient storage.

While this move toward smaller file sizes on frequently updated games is certainly convenient for players, it has an added benefit for developers as well. Smaller files sizes should mean that it’s easier for players to justify putting these games on solid state drives, which will allow developers to work around faster load times.

This Fortnite update is live now, and if you’re playing on PC, you should already have a smaller file size for the game.
